Netflix UX Case Study: Enhancing Content Discovery

Why Content Discovery Matters

With thousands of movies and TV shows, Netflix offers endless choices—but many users struggle to find something to watch. The goal of this case study was to improve content discovery by refining Netflix’s recommendation system, making it more intuitive and personalized.

The Problem: Too Many Choices, Not Enough Personalization

Users reported feeling overwhelmed by excessive options and frustrated by irrelevant recommendations. Key pain points included:

• A lack of control over recommendations

• Difficulty differentiating between trending and personalized content

• No easy way to refine suggestions based on mood, genre, or preferences

Through user research, I identified the need for a smarter, more user-driven discovery experience.

The Solution: Smarter Recommendations & Better Navigation

To improve content discovery, I redesigned the Netflix experience by introducing:

1. Personalized Filtering Options

✅ Users can manually adjust recommendation settings

✅ New filters for mood, genre, and watch duration

✅ Clear explanations for why content is recommended

2. Enhanced Browsing & Navigation

✅ More defined categories based on viewing habits

✅ A “Surprise Me” feature for quick, stress-free selections

✅ Improved “Continue Watching” section with more control over unfinished content

3. Community-Powered Reviews & Ratings

✅ Users can leave detailed ratings & reviews

✅ Enhanced trust in recommendations through community insights

Design & Prototyping

Using Figma, I designed and tested wireframes, mockups, and prototypes to validate the new UX. Through iterative user testing, I refined the interface to ensure clarity, accessibility, and engagement.

The Impact

The redesigned system puts users in control, reducing decision fatigue and increasing satisfaction. By improving personalization, navigation, and trust in recommendations, this project demonstrates how thoughtful UX design can enhance the streaming experience.
